Senzeni Ngubeni from SASSA says social grant payment after death is not transferable

SASSA warned family members who withdrew money of a deceased beneficiary are committing a serious criminal offence.

The South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) noted with shock that family members of beneficiaries who died before the beginning of the July’s payment cycle, still withdrew the money.

According to Senzeni Ngubeni, spokesman for Mpumalanga Sassa, the grant is paid into the beneficiary’s account at the beginning of September with the understanding that the grant is meant for the beneficiary.

Grant payments are not transferable without following the legislated procedures as prescribed by the Social Assistance Act.
