Nelson Mandela lives on in local community

Celebration of Mandela Day

The locals joined the annual Mandela Day.

• The Department of Correctional Services honoured Mandela Day at the Vukuzimele Club for the Aged on 18 July with several activities. A total of two kitchen stoves was repaired, a sign board donated for the organisation to be easily identified, recreational items were donated and soup and bread served.

• Mr Leon Hattingh gave three blankets to locals, who live in a garage at the Standerton Town Hall, on 18 July.

• Lekwa Municipality celebrated Mandela Day by helping Mbako Constructions hand over a newly-built RDP house to Ms Ntombi Selepe, whose house burnt down on 4 February. Mbako Constructions heard about the fire and decided to help rebuild the house. Ms MS Radebe-Khumala, acting executive mayor and councillors, then donated blankets to the Inhlosenhle Home Based Care Centre.

• Sakhile Police were involved in several worthy causes on Mandela Day.  They planted a fruit tree at the police station, cleaned and painted the station, fed and gave clothes to the homeless at the dumping site as well as donating toys to Thuto-Lesedi Day Care Centre.

• SAB in Standerton handed over food supplies to the Ekukhanyeni Drop-in Centre in Rooikopen alongside local tavern owners such as Bindas Liquor Store, Zamathembus Tavern, Zamagumbi Bottle Store, Nongombili Bottle Store, Lions Bottle Store and Chukwu Bottle Store.  The centre feeds 55 kids daily.

• Incredible Bears in Sakhile celebrated Mandela Day appropriately as well.

• Thuso Home Based Care in Ext 7 celebrated Madiba and the elderly, as well as drug users, were invited to a meal. Clothes were also donated.
