UPDATE- Three more protesters hand themselves over to Carolina Police

An additional three protesters handed themselves to the Carolina Police.

Their lawyers accompanied them.

The three protesters are currently in the Carolina District Court.


10 July – 8am

Const Thabang Mokwana, from the Carolina Police said: “Five community members, two women and three men aged between 27 and 56 appeared in the Carolina District Court in connection with arson and damage to municipal property.”

They allegedly torched the Silobela Constituency Office while they were expressing their dissatisfaction against Councillor Dan Nkosi, Mayor of the Chief Albert Luthuli Municipality.

The municipality apparently ignored their plea to address the community after they submitted a memorandum listing their demands and grievances on 4 July.

Lt Colonel MJ Mashinini, Station Commander from Carolina Police Station, said: “Community members have the right to raise their dissatisfaction however, they must do it within the boundaries of the law.

“Community members must not engage in criminal activities.”
