Inspector wants to stop backyard breeders

SPCA urges people to sterilise dogs and stop backyard breeding of puppies

BETHAL – Ms Laurna Coetzer, inspector of Bethal SPCA, thanked the community on behalf of the SPCA committee for their support and each blanket they received when the SPCA asked for help.

“We appreciate every gesture of help from the community,” said Ms Coetzer.

She urged backyard breeders who think they are going to make money from breeding with dogs and selling them, to stop.

“It is a big problem and concern to us,” said Ms Coetzer.

“We often get female dogs with between six and nine puppies dumped at our premises from people who thought they would make money from these puppies.

“People should sterilise their dogs because most of those dogs that get puppies, end up with us. Unfortunately we do not have the money and resources to raise all of those puppies and take care of them.

“I urge those people to please stop breeding with puppies or sterilise your dogs.”

Dogs can be sterilised when they are six months old.

Another problem the Bethal SPC are people shooting birds or animals with pallet guns.

“It is against the law to shoot with a pallet gun in a residential area,” said Ms Coetzer.

“If a person hurts a bird or animal with a pallet gun, it is an offence and it is animal abuse and you can be charged.”
