Suspects appear in court in Evander for carjacking and rape

Men applied for bail on Tuesday, 25 June

eMBALENHLE – Four men between the ages of 19 and 20, appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court on Monday, 24 June on charges of carjacking and rape.

According to Col Mtsholi Bhembe, spokesman of the Provincial Commissioner of Mpumalanga, the suspects were arrested in eMbalenhle on Friday, 14 June during a mandatory police operation after the vehicle they were travelling in, was positively circulated and found to have been hijacked.

“While the police were processing the paperwork of these suspects, a 27-year-old woman arrived at the police station to report a case of rape,” said Col Bhembe.

“The victim was apparently fleeing from her abusive boyfriend when out of anxiety and fear, she stopped the vehicle for help, but instead of helping, the suspects drove her to a secluded area where they allegedly raped her.”

The suspects remained in custody and appeared in the Evander Magistrate’s Court again on Tuesday, 25 June for formal bail application.
