AfriForum asks biology learners to come aboard their project to monitor water pollution in Secunda

Du Plessis invites high school life science learners to join him in this project

SECUNDA – The local AfriForum branch is monitoring the streams and rivers for water pollution in the Govan Mbeki municipal area as part of the community organisation’s blue drop programme.

Mr Jan du Plessis, chairman of the Secunda AfriForum branch, recently collected samples from the various points in the municipality which he then tested.

These points include several pump stations and sewage works in Kinross, Evander, Trichardt and Secunda, the dam wall at Lake Umuzi’s Boesies Restaurant and at the 14th hole on Graceland’s golf course.

“The e.coli and faecal coliforms growth was extreme.

“The phosphates and nitrates also tested far above the allowed levels,” said Mr Du Plessis.

He added that the sewage works at Trichardt are in the best condition.

“Evander’s sewage works lack equipment and absolutely nothing is working at the Kinross plant.”

Mr Du Plessis invited high school life science learners to join him in this project.

He has the necessary equipment available and encourages learners to consider this project as a study for the annual science expo.
