UPDATE: New pump stops raw sewage spillage at Graceland

The original pump was vandalised and burned out, because stones and sand were dumped in the filter.

SECUNDA – Raw sewage is no longer spilling onto the Graceland golf course thanks to the installation of a new pump at the pump station adjacent to the country club’s 14th hole.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality installed the new pump on Monday, 3 June after weeks of flooding the course and water ways with effluent.

The original pump was vandalised and burned out, because stones and sand were dumped in the filter.

Golf players and the management of Graceland were alarmed that fish and bird life were dying from the polluted water, while the stench and fairways drenched in sewage were cause for a health hazard concern.

The DA ward councillor, Ms Mariaan Chamberlain, played a key role in putting an end to the spillage.

Mr Jan du Plessis from AfriForum, took a sample from the stream on the golf course and analysed it as part of a larger water quality project.

He said the tests showed that the water was terribly contaminated.

The new pump was installed at the sewage pump station adjacent to Graceland Country Club.
