Gangsters threaten local townships

The gangs are suspected of various crimes such as rape, murder and robberies

HIGHVELD – Gangsterism has become a serious threat in the area as the number of young people who identify themselves as gangsters, are increasing.

Residents complained that they no longer have the freedom to go out, especially at night, as the gangsters are everywhere.

The residents said their lives are in danger as they are being terrorised daily by these gangs.

People alleged that these criminal groups have taken over the townships of eMbalenhle, Kinross and Leandra and are causing havoc and disharmony.

These gangs call themselves various names, such as: Phanda, Phandakazi, Kauta, Borokosiya and the most popular one, Wrong Turns.

They are known to be territorial and when residents go to other sections, they are intimidated by these groups.

It is alleged that there are adults who are perpetuating these gangs and that they have a traditional healer who give them ‘muti’ to boost them and make them feared by people.

Mr Sipho Khuzwayo from the Mpumalanga Department of Community Safety, Security and Liaison, said the department is working around the clock to come up with solutions.

“As the department and police cannot deal with this alone, we need the residents to assist with any information that can lead to the arrest of the suspects.

“Residents can provide information anonymously and we ensure that safety is guaranteed.

“We also heard about the traditional healer behind this and we are following up on some leads in order to apprehend him.

“If this not dealt with swiftly, our communities will be in serious danger.”

In one of the incidents the notorious gangs allegedly disrupted a funeral and police arrested over 25 gang members in Extension 18 in April.

These gang members are between the ages of 14 and 22 and are facing various charges including murder, public violence and assault.

At this stage, it is unclear to which group these members belong, but the police believe that it is between the Country Side Gang from Ext 14 and amaRhubane Gang from Ext 18.

Their arrests came after the police received a call that the congregants and family members, who were attending a night vigil for the funeral of one of the alleged gang members, were severely assaulted by a rival gang.

The gangs are said to be committing various crimes, such as assaults, murder, rape and robberies.

Mr Andries Sihlalo, CPF Sector 3 chairman, said the prevalence of gangstersim is a serious problem in the area.

“We must unite against this. If you know of any gang members, report it to the police.

“Do not wait to react until you are affected.

“The gangs are extremely dangerous. They walk around in groups of about 50 people, assaulting and stabbing random residents.

“They commit crime during the day without any fear. Let’s make it difficult for them by helping the police apprehend them.”

Const Busi Mthethwa, eMbalenhle Police spokesman, said an investigation is currently underway.

“The gang members that we arrested in April are still in custody.

“We are calling on our people come foward with any information that can lead to the arrest of other gangs or gang members. Those who are affected or terrorised by these gangs must open cases.”
