The destitute left to their own devices

A more pertinent question is whether the Lekwa Municipality has any bylaws pertaining to people sleeping in public places as in any metropole.

A concerned local recently contacted theĀ Standerton AdvertiserĀ about the homeless sleeping in front of the municipal offices and in front of the boxes inside the Standerton Post Office.

The man, who wished to remain anonymous, is adamant that the police and social services should intervene.

A more pertinent question is whether the Lekwa Municipality has any bylaws pertaining to people sleeping in public places as in any metropole.

Bylaws usually prohibit people from bathing or showering, as well as using drugs, on such premises as reported by the resident.

According to Ms Sithi Silosini, DA councellor deployed in Ward 3, the council has not approved any bylaws, but only has draft bylaws.

The newspaper sent an e-mail to Ms Thobeka Mtshiselwa, communications manager of the municipality, on Wednesday, 22 May about council approval.

The question was put to Ms Mtshiselwa on Friday, 24 May and she undertook to look into it.

Readers will be updated on the progress in this regard.
