The Legal Practice Council is established as a body corporate with full legal capacity and exercises jurisdiction over all legal practitioners and candidate legal practitioners.

The objectives of the council include: facilitating the realisation of the goal of a transformed and restructured legal profession that is accountable, efficient and independent.

The Legal Practice Council has replaced the four statutory provincial law societies and the Bar Council for advocates which fulfilled the dual purpose of regulating and representing attorneys and advocates respectively.
