KINROSS – The local police warn motorists not to pick up hitchhikers along the R29 between Kinross and Leandra.

According to Sgt Jaco Nagel, communication officer at Kinross Police Station, four hijackings involving hikers, were reported in the last three months.

The latest incident happened late afternoon on Monday, 8 April when a motorist stopped at the main four-way stop in Kinross to offer a lift to two men who claimed to be on their way to Springs.

“They climbed into the car and the motorist proceeded to the three-way stop at the entrance to Thistle Grove.

“He spotted two gunmen heading in his direction and wanted to speed off, but was met with force from the two men in the car who were actually in cahoots with the gunmen,” explained Sgt Nagel.

The hijackers dumped the motorist in Springs and fled with his black Golf.

The other hijackings happened in a similar fashion at different spots along the R29.

Sgt Nagel also advised commuters to refrain from hitching a ride as they often become the victims of robbery, assault and rape.

Anyone with information on the hijackings are asked to contact W/O MM Tshabalala at 017 687 0033.
