Drug dealers concern parents in Evander

Parents want to take action against drugs in Evander

EVANDER – Parents have raised their concerns over drug dealing in the area.

The concerned parents said they witness daily drug deals in the area and that the future has been destroyed by this crime.

They said local parks and some shops have become grounds for drug dealers.

They alleged that in some instances, learners are supplied with drugs before going to school.

Their main concern is that it looks like the drug dealers are untouchable and are protected by law enforcement agencies.

The parents alleged that drug dealers are roaming around the streets, even next to the local library.

“We do not know what to do anymore. We have organised prayers and marches against this practice, but it grows rapidly every day.

“What is shocking is that recently a group from eMbalenhle made attempts to tackle the suspected drug dealers in the area, however they were arrested in no time.

“This group cleaned up Evander and the dealers were quiet for some time.

“Police were suppose to arrest these people, they should have guided them on how to work within the boundaries of the law.”

Parents said the situation is out of control and that they fear for the future of their children.

They said their children have turned into monsters and criminals who steal from their homes to feed their addictions.

Parents said the tricky thing about this is that most of the drug dealers are foreign nationals and that it is difficult to take action against them, because they will be arrested and accused of xenophobia.

“We call on the law enforcement agencies to take a stand against drugs in Evander.

“Our kids are being destroyed.

“They are uncontrollable and some drop out of school due to drug-related issues.

“It is time that we unite as locals and fight against the crime,” said one of the concerned parents.

The parents said for now they want to remain anonymous, because they are afraid of becoming a target.

Sgt Sibusiso Mbuli, police spokesman, said the residents’ concerns are genuine, however they should not blame the police.

He said the police are working around the clock to deal with crime in the area.

“In regard to drug-related crimes we need the full cooperation from the community. Without their assistance it will be difficult to deal with the problem.

“Most of the drug dealers are renting homes in Evander and it is the residents that are giving these people accommodation.

“We urge residents to tighten their renting rules.

“They must have full details of their tenants and not to defend them whenever they have committed a crime.”
