Police and Sector 3 hand out pamphlets and create awareness in Secunda

Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman of Secunda Police, was happy about the people who showed up to take part in the campaign.

SECUNDA – The police and members of the Community Policing Forum (CPF) Sector 3 took part in a door-to-door campaign to educate residents about crime recently.

Capt Bettina Zondo, spokesman of Secunda Police, was happy about the people who showed up to take part in the campaign.

“We decided to do this door-to-door campaign, because of the crime in Secunda,” said Capt Zondo.

They handed out pamphlets at houses and businesses in Sector 3.

Sector 1 CPF already took part in such a campaign and Capt Zondo said they will also continue with the campaign in the other sectors.

On the pamphlets they handed out, were tips to improve safety and security at your house.

These tips include:

· Ensure there is enough lighting around your house and into the green strips next to your house.
· If you have an alarm system, put sensors on the outside of your house, it is a great pre-warning system before a break-in.
· Keep dogs inside your house. This will ensure your dogs are safe. They can warn you before the suspects break in. Dogs outside mean nothing if they are poisoned.
· Keep your animals at the back of your yard during the day. Many criminals steal and sell animals for drug money.
· When your dogs bark, check all the windows and doors, do not go outside.
· Most burglaries occur at the front of the house, mostly at the living room. In most cases, televisions, laptops and other electronics are stolen.
· Get to know your neighbours. Begin a WhatsApp group where you can discuss crime and planned action patrols.

The pamphlets also had information about vehicle safety, child safety, domestic workers and gardeners, important emergency numbers and information about the Curamus Victim Support Centre.

Curamus Victim Support Centre offers free services in helping with any traumatic experiences, death in the family, domestic violence, suicide and attempted suicide cases and bullying of children.
