Bethal CPF warns against recent dog poisoning

Symptoms of dog poisoning include irregular heartbeat, loss of blood (bruising, blood in stool, nosebleeds, anaemia), seizures and other neurological disorders diarrhoea, vomiting, inability to urinate, lethargy, loss of appetite, difficulty breathing, loss of balance, skin rash, swelling of the tongue and muscle rigidity and tremor.

The Bethal Community Policing Forum (CPF) warned residents of dog poisoning that recently happened in the area.

They received reports of dog poisoning in Sector 2 in Ribbok and Hartbees streets and believed the poison “Temik” was used.

The CPF believes that the poisoning of dogs are linked to burglaries.

Mr Jaap Pretorius, chairman of Bethal CPF, said it is not proven that burglaries only took place when dogs were poisoned.

“Burglaries can occur anywhere in that vicinity,” said Mr Prerorius.

He urged residents to be vigilant and report any suspicious behaviour or dog poisoning to the police.

What to do if your dogs are poisoned:

* First try to determine what your dog was exposed to. Look around for evidence.
* Contact your vet.

There are three ways your dogs can be poisoned, contact with the skin, breathing in toxins of poison and consuming food contaminated with poison.

If your dog is suffering from one or more of the above symptoms, get help immediately.

Do not touch with animal or poison with bare hands as you can also get sick.
