Attackers who performed forced abortion on eight-month pregnant Secunda woman, appears before regional magistrate

Due to the severity of the case, it was eventually referred to a higher court where stricter sentences can be meted out

SECUNDA – The four people who were arrested in July last year for allegedly kidnapping an eight-month pregnant woman and performing an abortion on her, appeared in the Secunda Regional Court on Wednesday, 27 February.

Ms Lydia Mojemba (34) and Messrs Seyikabi Wilson (46), Jingo Wassua (35) and Njombozi Katiti (43) appeared before Regional Magistrate Graham Cupido who will be presiding over their trial.

The accused appeared in the magistrate’s court shortly after their arrest last year. Due to the severity of the case, it was eventually referred to a higher court where stricter sentences can be meted out.

The alleged abortionist-gang is accused of snatching the young mother-to-be from her home in Sunset Park in Secunda, and taking her to Ogies on 13 July.

According to the police the victim was locked in a room and numerous abortion tablets were forced down her throat and also vaginally inserted.

This apparently continued until the baby was still-born, taken from his mother and dumped near the railway bridge in Ogies.

The victim eventually, after several days of being held hostage, escaped and fled back to her boyfriend in Secunda, who is the father of the baby.

The young woman previously said she is related Ms Mojemba, a traditional healer from Ogies, who is allegedly also an abortionist.

She was allegedly also employed to recruit clients for Ms Mojemba in Secunda, but she then met her boyfriend and fell pregnant.

The woman claimed her aunt was allegedly furious about the news.

The accused were not granted bail and remain in police custody. The case was postponed to 28 March.
