Parents arrested for assault after beating child in Mayflower

It is alleged that the two suspects, the mother and stepfather to the child, returned from a tavern the previous night at around 10pm and found the victim making marijuana popcorn in the house.

Mayflower Police arrested two people for assault on Tuesday, 26 February.

The two suspects, Mahummed Nhlabathi (35) and Thembi Ndlangamandla (32) were arrested at around 6.45pm and charged with assault to cause grievous bodily harm after beating their son.

It is alleged that the two suspects, the mother and stepfather to the child, returned from a tavern the previous night at around 10pm and found the victim making marijuana-popcorn in the house.

They allegedly began disciplining him by hitting him with a belt.

“The victim fell onto the two-plate stove and sustained injuries on his hands,” Const Tryphina Utla, Mayflower Police spokesman, said.

The two appeared in the Mayflower Periodical Court on Wednesday, 27 February and the case was postponed until Monday, 11 March for further investigation.
