Good Samaritans feed grant collectors in Kinross

Those who visit the Post Office say that it is in need of an upgrade and the addition of chairs for those who sit on the ground from as early as 6am.

KINROSS – The first of every month for residents expecting to collect their Sassa grants in the Kinross area, is a day that many have bittersweet feelings towards.

The expectation of receiving money to feed their families and sustain their homes get them going, but the thought of the long full day of waiting gets them down.

Those who visit the post office say that it is in need of an upgrade and an addition of chairs for those who sit on the ground from as early as 6am.

Due to the lack of other places to collect their Sassa grant in the Kinross area, the post office is their only choice.

Ms Marina Lottering, a resident, approached the post office to request permission to feed the people who come to collect their grants on Friday, 1 March.

A woman is enjoying the meal that was provided at the post office.

Ms Lottering and Ms Rose Jason arrived at 9am and were armed with beef stew, pap, and a table to feed the young, the old, and the mothers who sat on the grass nursing.

As the people received their long-awaited grants, they were greeted with a plate of food and a refreshing drink.

“The people were very tired, hot and thirsty. Some were using crutches and were struggling to walk. They really appreciated the meal,” said Ms Lottering.

People were sitting inside, some on the cement paving outside the post office and others took shelter in the shade of the trees.

“These are our people, it is our community. Old and young sit at the post office in the rain and blazing heat. We had to do something,” said Ms Lottering.

She pleaded with the community and businesses in the area to assist residents monthly by donating water, food, and other goods.
