Bethal SPCA needs money to operate

Donate for animal welfare

BETHAL – The management of the local SPCA is planning big things for this year.

Ms Laurna Coetzer, manager and inspector of Bethal SPCA, said they went through a dip last year, but they are looking with new eyes at the new year.

They currently have a big need to get animals sterilised.

“Not everyone can afford to have their pets sterilised and we are planning to start a fund specifically for those who cannot afford it, have their pets sterilised,” said Ms Coetzer.

“We saw in December how many dogs escaped while the owners were on holiday, and then we cannot locate the owners.

“Some of the dogs from December are still with us.”

To fight this problem, the SPCA management decided to begin a registation database so they will be able to locate the owners of the lost animals. This is not the same as having animals micro chipped.

With the registration process, owners simply need to visit the Bethal SPCA and provide their full details and also a photo of their animals.

Registration costs will be R100 per pet a year.

Ms Coetzer’s aim for the new year is to make Bethal a fireworks free zone.

“Many animals run away in December because they are scared of the fireworks.”

Bethal SPCA is totally dependent on donations from the public.

They do not receive any money from the government or Govan Mbeki Municipality.

They are responsible for the Bethal and Davel areas and need cash to pay for fuel, water and electricity accounts, salaries, cat and dog food and cleaning materials.

They currently urgently need F10 veterinary disinfectant.

Ms Coetzer urged residents to take their puppies for vaccinations. She wants to begin a campaign to educate people about vaccinations and help in getting their animals vaccinated.

Bethal SPCA also offers boarding for animals when their owners go away o holiday. They have a special area for smaller dogs with infrared lights in the winter to keep the animals warm.

However, going forward, Bethal SPCA will require the paperwork from owners that their animals are vaccinated if they board at the SPCA.

“We have been very successful with animal adoptions, because we try our best to fit the right pet with the best owner,” said Ms Coetzer.
