Ermelo Taxi Association drivers confront three men for defrauding elderly man at ATM

The taxi drivers chased after the suspects and cornered them at the corner of Church and Voortrekker street.

Three suspects were arrested by the Ermelo Police for fraud and possession of a card skimming device on Friday, 11 January.

The arrest comes after the suspects were confronted by taxi drivers from the Ermelo Taxi Association, who witnessed one of the suspects defrauding an elderly man at an ATM at one of the service garages in town.

The taxi drivers chased after the suspect who fled with the other two suspects in a vehicle.

However, the taxi drivers cornered them at the corner of Church and Voortrekker Street.

The police were called to the scene and the three men were arrested.

According to Capt Carla Prinsloo, the suspects were found in possession of a card skimming device.

In another incident, parallel to this case, a woman was also defrauded while withdrawing money at one of the shopping centres in town.

She overhead the story of the taxi drivers catching the suspects on her way home in a taxi and shared her story.

The woman identified one of the suspects as the man who had defrauded her.

According to Mr Chippa Ntshangase from the Ermelo Taxi Association, taxi commuters had reported many incidents of fraud during the festive season which is why they took action.

Police urge residents to be alert and vigilant when using the ATM machines around town.
