Breyten residents being scammed online

Shop owners are also urged to be observant and comply with the closing times of their businesses and report any criminal activity to the Police Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or SMS, 32211.

The public is hereby warned to verify all items that are sold online after a few incidents in Breyten have been reported, where people have been scammed online.

According to Breyten Police spokesman, Sgt Thabo Mashegoane, people see vehicles or properties for sale online and without verifying the seller’s particulars, they will just send cash to purchase.

“After being requested by the fraudster to deposit money so they can deliver the items, the scammer’s phone will go unanswered.

Sgt Mashegoane said that in another incident, a victim’s vehicle was reported stolen at his house in Breyten and he received a call saying his vehicle had been recovered and he must send cash for the towing service.

“After depositing the money he waited until he realised that it was a scam.”

The public is also advised not to carry large amounts of cash while walking or driving this festive season and be vigilant when using ATMs.

The public is urged to report any criminal activity to the Police Crime Stop line at 08600 10111 or SMS, 32211.
