EVANDER – The Christ the King Church in Evander hosted their 10th annual Christmas party for orphans on Saturday, 1 December.

The day began at 8am when the children arrived and came to a close in the afternoon around 4pm after the children were fed and received party packs.

Hope Home Based Care and Buhlebethu Home Based Care from Afghanistan, as well as Simunye Home Based Care from Trichardt brought about 400 orphaned children from the age of two up to the age of 16, to the church in Evander to enjoy a day filled with fun, food and sporting activities.

This special day for the children has been running for 10 years with Ms Queenie Benjamin, a member of the church’s congregation, ensuring that everything runs smoothly with the covering of the church’s priest, Father Anthony Ikeji.

The Holy Family Church in Secunda and the Holy Trinity Church in Kinross partnered with Christ the King to ensure that each child felt special on the day.

There were a number of volunteers from the church and community who came to cook, pack party packs, support and show the children love, as they enter the festive season.

It takes almost six months to prepare for this day, as just after the Easter Weekend comes to a close, the planning for this event is in full swing.

Youth members were assisting with face painting and refereeing soccer matches.

The church runs numerous fundraising initiatives to help support orphans in need and together with generous donations from the community and businesses, the outreach was a success.

Ms Benjamin encouraged the community to get involved in helping to make Christmas for someone in need a special time for them to remember and enjoy.
