Leandra Taxi Violence: Driver assaulted and taxi set alight

A police van from Charl Cilliers Police Station was allegedly involved in an accident with a truck at the R50/R29 fourway stop l, while they were still trying to resolve the situation.

LEANDRA – A case of public violence has been opened at the Leandra Police Station following the alleged taxi violence which began earlier today.

It is alleged that the taxi driver was coming from Zibulo Colliery to drop off staff members who were going to work.

He was using the Leslie/Ogies road going to eMbalenhle.

It is alleged that as he was approaching the T- junction, he was stopped by a group of taxi drivers using different taxis.

They allegedly instructed him to drive the opposite direction towards Leslie on the R29 Norda Street.

They escorted him and pulled him out of the taxi.

According to police, they allegedly assaulted him and took R7 000 which was allegedly in his pocket.

Police said while they were still assaulting him, he allegedly noticed that his Toyota Quantum had caught fire.

He managed to escape and ran to the police station.

In another incident, another victim in Norda Street, next Standard Bank’s ATM, noticed an alledge reckless driver and when he allegedly tried to reprimand him for almost causing a collision, a group of taxi drivers attacked him.

He was allegedly assaulted, however he managed to escape.

His car was unfortunately damaged.
