Be prepared for emergency exercise on 28 November

The exercise will only affect the area next to the river, namely Ext 18, Ward 9 and 18.

eMBALENHLE – The Govan Mbeki Community Awareness and Emergency Response (CAER) Committee is planning an emergency exercise that will involve Sasol, the Govan Mbeki emergency teams, the local emergency services and the community.

Operation Troubled Waters will take place from 1pm on Wednesday 28 November.

It will simulate a spillage from the Sasol plant and the contamination of the Klipspruit river to eMbalenhle, and will involve fake medical cases.

The community is informed that emergency sirens will be heard in the residential area that day.

The exercise will only affect the area next to the river, namely Ext 18, Ward 9 and 18. Residents of the other areas in Govan Mbeki Municipality are requested to go about their daily activities as normal.

The exercise will help all the emergency role players to test their response times and to sharpen up and be ready for when such an emergency occurs.

This will also be an awareness exercise for the community to educate residents on the dangers of pollution.

Operation Troubled Waters warns people to not underestimate the risk carried by drinking, swimming in or using dirty water from unprotected streams.

The Govan Mbeki Municipality and Megabus will be involved in another mock emergency near Osizweni on the morning of 7 December when a bus accident will be simulated.
