Shirley Coetzee opens House of Mercy Hospice in Secunda

Hospice can provide full-time care for 10 patients

SECUNDA – Ms Shirley Coetzee opened a hospice at her house about three months ago and the official launch for the opening was celebrated last week at the Kruik Church.

This newly found hospice will be called House of Mercy.

Ms Coetzee realised there is a need in Secunda for a hospice and she has always loved working with fragile people.

Ms Coetzee’s husband, Mr Deon Coetzee, opened the event by saying when people are diagnosed with cancer or other illnesses, they usually go through a few phases of grief, that starts at anger and ends with acceptance.

“People who are diagnosed with cancer, usually become depressed and caretakers must understand that these people do not only need physical support, but also emotional support,” said Mr Coetzee.

“It takes a special kind of person to care for people who cannot take care of themselves.” The hospice can accommodate about 10 people.
