Water dries up in Bethal as reservoir runs empty

Residents are frustrated without water

BETHAL – Residents had a few dry days when Bethal recently experienced water problems.

There was no water in certain parts of Bethal on 17 September, but it was restored later the same evening.

One of the reservoirs in Bethal was empty and left residents without water on 25 September.

There was still a problem with supply on 1 October and Ms Marietjie Fourie, DA Councillor, informed residents that there was a 315mm AC pipe burst in Stutterheim Street and Bethal Rand and Extentions 3, 5, and 8 and Bethal town area was without water.

The water pressure in Extension 5 was low because the reservoir was empty.

Rand Water was notified and requested to stop pumping water to Bethal to reduce pressure to enable repairs.

The municipality began pumping the water back at around 8pm on the same evening, but the next morning a few households still did not have water.

Ms Fourie informed residents that it takes a while to refill all the reservoirs, pipes and geysers with water again.

Residents later found out that the water problems were only fixed temporarily and they were without water again the next day.

Municipal workers fixed the problem again, but on Monday morning (8 October) some residents were without water once again.

Ms Fourie said they pump water until the reservoirs are overflowing and then water is being wasted for 12 hours as the reservoirs overflow and at other times the reservoirs run empty and then it takes time to fill up again.

The supply line to the reservoir was fixed on Thursday, 11 October and residents have water again.
