Robbers overpower Kinross homeowner

Elderly man wrestles with three men who overpowered him

KINROSS – Mr Jan Coetzer, founder of Janelle Huis, a place of safety for vulnerable children, is thankful that he is alive after being attacked by three men in his house in Kinross yesterday morning, 11 October.

Mr Coetzer saw his wife, Ms Estelle Coetzer off to work at Janelle Huis at about 6.30am and went inside his garage to exercise.

“I have gym equipment in my garage and I exercise there every morning,” said Mr Coetzer.

During his training session, he stopped to use the bathroom and upon his return, encountered three men in his yard.

He tried to lock the security gate, but he was not fast enough and they pounced on him.

He wrestled with them, but then one of the men pulled a gun on Mr Coetzer.

They forced him inside the house as one assailant kept shouting: “Shoot him, shoot him!”

Two held him down while the third man who was holding the gun hit Mr Coetzer over the head.

Mr Coetzer tried to protect his head with his hands and has thus sustained several injuries to his fingers and head.

The robbers left after stealing jewellery, a television and Mr Coetzer’s firearm form his safe.

Mr Coetzer managed to contact his family and the police. He was taken to hospital where the wounds on his head were stitched up.

No one has yet been arrested.

The police are still investigating the crime.
