Winners of school radio drama competition announced at VoC gala dinner

The two schools walked away with R25 000 each in prize money.

VoC FM, working with the National Lottery Commission, hosted a gala dinner on Thursday, 6 September to announce the winners of the Gert Sibande District School of Radio Drama competition.

The radio station has been running the competition since May and hosting training camps for teachers and learners to help create a radio drama to be aired.

The competition took place in the seven local municipalities of the Gert Sibande District where stakeholders saw the need to provide a platform where stories of social ills in society can be told and challenged by learners.

Ten schools took part and a member of the production team at the radio station acted as a facilitator for each school.

The airing of the dramas began in May and communities in the district were given a chance to listen, voice their opinions and ultimately vote for the winning school.

Winners got the prize money, while participating schools got an incentive of R5 000 each.

Learners presented a 25 minute drama, using only their voices and sound effects and lots of talent shone through.

The night was filled with glitz and glamour with the learners showcasing what they have learnt on their journey throughout the competition.

Acclaimed artist Ntokozo Zungu entertained the people, while the renowned actor Masoja Msiza and Dr Molapo gave words of motivation that kept the audience enthralled.

However, only two schools rose above the rest.

Sizakhele Primary School from Bethal took the primary schools’ crown and Qedela Secondary School from Piet Retief took the high schools’ number one spot.

The two schools walked away with R25 000 each in prize money.

The National Lottery Commission has pledged to help the community and its radio stations to unearth local talent.
