Solidarity gives Sasol notice of strike by white employees

Date of strike is not yet known

The trade union Solidarity gave Sasol notice about the strike they are planning.

According to law, Solidarity is required to give Sasol 48 hours’ notice and they gave the notice yesterday (28 August), but according to Dr Dirk Hermann, chief executive of Solidarity, that does not mean that the strike action will begin 48 hours from the time of the notice.

This came after 83 per cent of Solidarity’s members working at Sasol in Secunda voted for a strike and 95 per cent of Solidarity members working in Sasolburg.

The members are upset because Sasol’s newest staff share scheme, Khanyisa, excludes white employees.

According to Dr Hermann, documentation that is available on Sasol Khanyisa’s website, clearly states that white employees and foreign nationals are excluded from obtaining shares from the staff share scheme.

“Our members at Sasol unanimously said: ‘Enough is enough’ and this type of crude racial exclusion cannot be tolerated any longer,” said Dr Hermann.

“ These white workers are also valuable.”
