Dry taps: Community helps Evander Hospital when taps ran dry

Some parts of Bethal were still high and dry by the time of going to press on Monday

HIGHVELD – Taps in the Govan Mbeki Municipal area ran dry on 6 July due to an electrical break down at Rand Water.

While Eskom was repairing the problem, Rand Water was unable to pump water to this area and towns as far as Devon were affected. The local reservoirs’ water levels quickly dipped to critically low and that impacted the water pressure.

Although water supply to the Secunda and Trichardt area was restored by Friday evening, Bethal took the brunt. Some parts of Bethal were still high and dry at time of going to press on Monday.

This was largely due to additional mechanical problems.

Ms Estelle Swart, DA councillor in Evander, said Evander was only experiencing water supply problems on Sunday.

The water at Evander Hospital soon dried up and Ms Swart sent out a plea for water donations on Sunday afternoon.

“Within 30 minutes 120 litres of water were dropped off. The hospital personnel was very thankful for the community’s help,” said Ms Swart. The water in Evander was off until nearly midnight.
