[UPDATE 06:00 11 May 2018]

DA Councillor Marietjie Fourie warned residents in February that they were likely to be faced with low water pressure in the coming months because Govan Mbeki Municipality has repeatedly failed to pay Rand Water.

She said in a press statement on 21 February that the municipality at that time owed Rand Water R131.2 million which included arrears of R105 million and a current account of R25.8 million – plus interest.

“At that time the municipality was supposed to pay the R25,8 million to Rand Water by the end of February and the total arrears amount was supposed to have been paid by the end of February. Rand Water said that failure to make the required payment on time would force the company to reduce the pressure by 20 per cent. ”

Ms Fourie said the council insisted on sticking to their own repayment plan Rand Water rejecting that proposal in the beginning of the year.

“It is evident that this ANC-led municipality cannot handle or account for its finances properly. They must swallow their pride and ask the DA to help,” Ms Fourie said in the February statement.

She said that the water pressure has been further reduced because of non-payment.

………………..

HIGHVELD – Rand Water began implementing 40 per cent restrictions on water supply to Govan Mbeki Municipality.

According DA Councillor, Ms Marietjie Fourie, this is happening because the council has failed to pay up.

Rand Water has throttled the supply by 20 per cent up to today, 10 May, but has now tightened their grip.

Areas that have already been affected include Secunda and Kinross.

Ms Fourie warned residents in February that they were likely to be faced with low water pressure in the coming months because the local municipality has repeatedly failed to pay Rand Water.

She said in a press statement on 21 February that the municipality at that time owed Rand Water R131.2 million which included arrears of R105 million and a current account of R25.8 million – plus interests.

“At that time the municipality was supposed to pay the R25,8 million to Rand Water by the end of February and the total arrears amount was supposed to have been paid off by the end of February. Rand Water said that failure to make the required payment on time would force the company to reduce the pressure by 20 per cent.”

Ms Fourie said the council insisted on sticking to their own repayment plan despite of the fact that Rand Water had rejected that proposal in the beginning of the year.

“It is evident that this ANC-led municipality cannot handle or account for its’ finances properly. They must swallow their pride and ask the DA to help,” Ms Fourie said in the February statement.

She said today that the water pressure has been further reduced because of non-payment.
