Woman mistakes serval for leopard between Trichardt and Kinross

Farmer says it was definitely not a leopard.

A woman thought she saw a leopard this morning on the N17 highway between Trichardt and Kinross near Syferfontein Mine and alerted the police.

According to Capt Tania Marx of Secunda Police, she later received a phone call from a farmer in that area who said he often sees servals in that area and that the serval can easily be mistaken for a leopard, especially when it is running.

The farmer said the serval is not a threat to people as he often sees them and they have never tried to attack people.

According to the farmer, leopards do not live in this area.

The Ridge Times reported last year on servals living at Sasol and scientists visited Secunda last year to do research on the serval. This project is still ongoing.
