Hlolweni wants the new mayor of Govan Mbeki Municipality out

Ms Maboa-Boltman has distanced herself from Sapromo's campaign to remove Ms Thandi Ngconono as the mayor.

HIGHVELD – Mr Sibusiso Hlolweni, president of the Sakhisizwe Progressive Movement (Sapromo), has intensified his campaign to remove Ms Thandi Ngxonono from her office as the executive mayor of the Govan Mbeki Municipality.

He said Ms Ngxonono is not competent and fit to be the mayor.

Ms Ngxonono was sworn in as the new executive mayor of the municipality on 13 March.

She replaced Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman who resigned on 5 March after the ANC had recalled her.

Mr Hlolweni and his party has launched a petition against the mayor that can be signed by the public.

He called on the public to support his motion of no confidence in the mayor.

Sapromo tabled a motion of no confidence in the Ms Thandi Ngxonono on Wednesday, 7 March.

“We received a call from residents who are also interested in supporting our motion.

“However we know that residents are not allowed to participate in the council meetings and we created the petition.

“This petition will help us to find out how the community feels about Ms Ngxonono and we will present the results to the council.”

Mr Hlolweni said the mayor has failed in her previous portfolio as the MMC for Finance.

He said when Ms Ngxonono was appointed as the MMC for Finances, the municipality moved from bad to worse.

Mr Hlolweni further lambasted those who said his campaign was founded by the former mayor, Ms Flora Maboa-Boltman.

He said that is an insult to him and his party.

“Those who are spreading these rumours are helpless lairs.

“Firstly, one do not need any funding to write a motion. You just type the thing, print it and hand it to the office of the Speaker.

“Secondly, the petition form is freely available on Google and I used my data allowance to circulate it to the public.

“Sapromo is a party and we participated in the local government election with funding from individuals. We funded ourselves and managed to get a seat in the chamber.

“Ms Maboa-Boltman is a member of the African National Congress and we have nothing to do with her and her party.

“We only want Ms Ngxonono out for the benefits of the community.”

The Ridge Times contacted Ms Maboa-Boltman for comment on the allegations.

She was shocked that she was implicated in matters of opposition parties.

She said she is a disciplined member of the ANC and that she has always remained loyal and faithful to her party.

“I resigned based on the comment and the request of this glorious movement that I am serving.

“I am out of the Govan Mbeki Municipality and people must just let me move on with my life in peace.

“I am happy with where my party has deployed me to and am 100 per cent behind Comrade Thandi.

“She must continue where we ended and improve the lives of our people.

“The ANC gave me the opportunity to serve as the mayor and I did all I could and it is now Comrade Thandi’s time to lead.

“I will be always available to assist where I can and whenever I am requested.”
