Kristopher Ryan Centre invites students to workshop

The centre’s new executive committee restructured the centre’s enrolment procedures and asked interested students to visit the centre on 15 and 16 January from 10am to 3.30pm for a workshop.

The management of Kristopher Ryan Centre is expecting a large intake of beneficiaries this year.

The centre’s new executive committee restructured the centre’s enrolment procedures and asked interested students to visit the centre on 15 and 16 January from 10am to 3.30pm for a workshop.

Kristopher Ryan Centre opened its doors in 2001 and was started by Ms Joy du Plessis and Ms Mary Meyer.

Their sons, Kristopher and Ryan, needed a place where adults with disabilities could go to.

The centre originally began in one of the classrooms at Marietjie School, but later moved to its own premises in the same area.

The centre is open from Mondays to Fridays from 8am to 1pm and serves breakfast and lunch to their adult students.

School fees are R300 a month and the Department of Social Welfare contributes R5 100 monthly towards the centre for food.

“The money from the department is greatly appreciated, but it does not cover the running costs of the centre,” said Ms Pam Kotze, a committee member.

Sasol donated ovens to the centre and one is used in the centre’s bakery where they bake and sell cookies and bread to help with the centre’s running costs.

The committee plans to give life skills training, such as gardening, knitting, crochet, art and sport, to their students from this year and invited volunteers who are willing to help to contact them.

The chairman, Mr Canny Mashele, and the committee thanked the public and their sponsors who support them.
