Still no justice for electrocuted Leandra girl

Charlene’s family is struggling to find closure.

The family of Charlene Jacobs, a seven-year-old girl who died after being electrocuted by a light pole in Leandra last year, has lost hope that justice will be served.

Charlene was electrocuted while she was playing with her friends in the street.

An eyewitness said the girl ran towards the light pole and held it while they were playing. She immediately collapsed.

They reported the incident to the adults nearby who then tried to rush her to the clinic.

However she died on the scene.

Mr Charlie Jacobs, her father, said he has not received any update from the police since the death of his daughter.

“I went to the station to enquire, but I did not get any information. The police said Govan Mbeki Municipality did not give them a statement. In actual fact they could not give me a proper answer why they were not investigating the case.”

He said despite Ms Florah Maboa-Boltman, executive mayor’s, promising to intervene, he has heard nothing from her or the council.

“I do not know what to do now. I contacted the president’s help line with no luck.

“I am intending to write to the public protector and I hope she will respond.

“Even the kids who saw this were never given counselling.”

W/O Khuselwa Matrouse, police spokesman, said she needed to consult the management about the matter.

Govan Mbeki Municipality did not comment at time of going to press.
