Govan Mbeki Municipality has failed residents

The Govan Mbeki Municipality was not available to give answers to the community.

Eskom has been implementing bulk power supply interruptions in the Govan Mbeki Municipality from Monday, 9 October.

This came after Govan Mbeki Municipality failed to pay its debt of about R536 million to Eskom.

Eskom has disconnected the electricity of Secunda, Bethal, eMbalenhle and eMzinoni at these scheduled times:

* Mondays to Fridays from 6am to 8am and again at 5pm to 7.30pm.

* Saturdays and Sundays from 8.30am to 11am and again from 3p to 5.30pm.

Mr Khulu Phasiwe, Eskom spokesman, said the decision was taken after the municipality failed to present a convincing payment agreement plan.

He said Eskom will continue with the interruption until the municipality pays.

“They owe us half a billion rand and we know that there is no way they can pay it all at once, however we are saying they should at least pay a significant amount.

“Our doors are still open for negotiation.

“It is not our intention to cut the power because we know it affects many people who are on prepaid, however we are dealing with our client which is the municipality.”

The Ridge Times contacted Mr Thisha Mhlanga, acting municipal manager, for comment.

He was in a meeting and requested the newspaper to contact him after an hour.

The newspaper contacted him, but his phone rang for a long time before going to voice mail.
