Secunda emergency services had their hands full over the long weekend because of several accidents in and around Secunda.
ER24, Langamed South Ambulance Services and Bethal EMS reported more that 10 accidents.
Many drivers and passengers sustained moderate to serious injuries and there were also fatalities.
- Accident reports already started streaming in on Friday with a bumper bash in Bethal which Bethal EMS responded to.Nobody was injured.
- Langamed South Ambulance Services also responded to a collision on Friday night on the Clever road near Kriel. On arrival they found that two vehicles collided, leaving five people injured. A man sustained critical injuries while another man was entrapped in the wreckage. He was freed by fire and rescue services from Kriel and Eskom. A baby and his young mother also sustained injuries. The injured were all stabilised and taken to hospital. The cause of the collision is still unclear and will be investigated.
- Three people died and two sustained minor injuries on Saturday evening in Evander when two vehicles collided.
- In another accident during which a vehicle overturned, five people where injured. This accident happened on the R546 road between eMbalenhle and Evander on Saturday morning.
- A man died on the R546 road near Walker Park Golf Club and two others were injured on Saturday morning.
- A woman’s car overturned near Hoërskool Secunda and rescue services had to use the Jaws of Life to free her.
- Two people died on the scene on Saturday evening and seven were injured in a collision near the Leandra tollgate. ER24, Langamed South Ambulance Services as well as provincial emergency services treated and transported patients.
According to Arrive Alive:
– It is reported that 40 per cent of people who die on the country’s roads are pedestrians.
– About 60 per cent of pedestrians and drivers are under the influence of alcohol.
– 33 per cent of people who die on roads are passengers.
– Only two percent of passengers buckle up.
