Community not impressed with Govan Mbeki Municipality’s first runner-up prize in competition

Social media reacted negatively to the municipal announcement that it won R3 million.

Govan Mbeki Municipality walked away with prize money of R3 million in the local municipality category and was the first runner-up at the sixth Greenest Municipality Competition in Bloemfontein recently.

Locals reacted on social media following the announcement and voiced their disbelieve.

Preston Pillay said: “Sasol should have won that money. They anyway fix the roads and clean up the area. GMM can’t even fix street lights or prevent sewers from overflowing into and contaminating the dams and rivers.”

PW van Zyl said: “With no licensed refuse dumping site in the whole area? With rubble lying in the road to the old Evander dumping site, with Evander and eMbalenhle’s raw sewage flowing into the Vaal catchment? With Secunda CBD looking like a war zone by the food caravans? Then I surely do not want to see the towns that did not win.”

Hlengiwe Ngcongwane said: “You must be joking or u bribed the judges, I have never seen a dirtier place like this Govan Mbeki Municipality.”
