Highveld Ridge Primary School won the Provincial AstroQuiz competition and went through to the National AstroQuiz competition in October.
The school is represented by Masindi Nekhubvi, Phindo Malinga, Lesego Dibakwane and Ashlin Budharam.
The AstroQuiz competition is a live, interactive astronomy-focused questions and answers competition for teams of primary school learners.
Initially founded in 2005 at Sci-Bono Discovery Centre by means of an NRF/SAASTA grant for the National Astronomy Platform Month, the competition enjoyed almost instant success and was subsequently established as a fixed annual competition that gained a national footprint.
The objective is to contribute to the improvement of awareness, interest, understanding and insight into basic astronomy, as well as to build an appreciation of and pride in South Africa’s history of science activity and achievements, among others.
Osizweni Science Centre hosted the AstroQuiz competition for the first time this year.
Altogether 32 schools in the Standerton sub region took part in round one on 26 May.
Each school is represented by a team of four Grade 7 learners.
Round two took place on 28 July with the 27 qualifying schools from round one.
Five schools from the Standerton sub-region in Gert Sibande Municipal District progressed to the provincial competition.
They are Highveld Ridge Primary School, TP Stratten Primary School, Azalea Combined School, Shapeve Primary School and Laerskool Trichardt.
The Provincial AstroQuiz competition took place in Nelspruit on 25 August.
Each region in the province was represented by 10 teams, making it a total of 40 teams competing in total.
