SRC members of GS College impresses at business breakfast

The main objective of the breakfast was to request the industry to absorb students from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges.

The Student Representative Council (SRC) of Gert Sibande College impressed last Friday when they held a business breakfast at the Mayor’s Parlour at Gert Sibande District Municipality to attract investors and recruiters .

The main objective of the breakfast was to request the industry to absorb students from Technical and Vocational Education and Training (TVET) colleges, as government is not assisting with students graduating with no job opportunities.

“We appeal to the industry to absorb the colleges. In that way they set the curriculum and students study what is required by the industry. China does it. We cannot rely on government all the time,” said SRC president Genius Shabalala.

The breakfast also showcased numerous projects currently underway at the college, personal and collective achievements by the students and appeals to businesses to invest in the college.

The council pulled out all the stops as they presented the vision of the college, the struggles students face daily, the most vital being transportation and accommodation costs.

The SCR appealed to all present to invest in a scholar transport system that will alleviate absenteeism in order for students to put their best foot forward when attending classes.

Current and future projects were presented with the SCR personally responsible for a vegetable garden of which the produce is donated to disadvantaged students and the community.

Recruiting of students was thoroughly conveyed with SCR members indicating students can volunteer their skills to gain workplace experience.

Ermelo campus manager, Ms Andri Steyn, reiterated the SCR’s words, appealing to business and organisation heads present to consider TVET colleges as recruitment agencies.

Students from Sibanisethu campus showcased projects they built, explaining the thought process behind each mechanical movement.

Potential investors like Murray and Roberts offered words of encouragement and support with Ligwa FM pledging a platform for the SCR to convey their messages and aims on air.
