Beach dogs in Mozambique treated by Little Paws Big Hearts

“During holidays they find themselves a family and then stay with them until the holidaymakers leave for home. ”

SECUNDA – Members from Little Paws Big Hearts visited Ponta Do Ouro in Mozambique recently.

“Going there is always very exciting. Your first thoughts are always whether we will see the beach dogs again and how many are still alive.

“We never leave without food for them and the cats. This time our food was sponsored by short term insurance brokers in Secunda,” said Ms Sonja Kempen.

On their arrival at the border post they were greeted by the first beach dog on the Mozambican side.

At the Whaler Dive camp even more dogs welcomed them back.

The dogs were very happy to see them.

“During holidays they find themselves a family and then stay with them until the holidaymakers leave for home. Others like Angel, Tiger and Gogo leave early in the morning for the beach, but return home in the afternoon to eat and rest for the night. What a privilege it is to be on the beach early in the morning and seeing the dogs running and playing on the beach,” said Mr Louis Kempen.

The sand causes the dogs to be invested with fleas which is a huge problem

“We have applied flea powder, but this needs to be done daily and another problem is that their nails keep growing very fast and are very long. They need regular trimming.”

They saw many beach dogs over the first few days. Some walked along the beach and even went to Ponta Malangane.

“They walk in town and we have also seen them at the market,” Ms Kempen added.

Little Paws Big Hearts is planning a full scale outreach later in the year.
