FOLLOW-UP: Child among five killed in N17 highway accident

The N17 was closed for three hours while the road was cleared after two vehicles collided head-on.

The N17 highway was closed on 18 June at 11pm after two vehicles had collided head-on just outside Bethal.

Five people sustained fatal injuries and died on the scene.

According to an emergency worker who was on the scene, nothing could have been done for the victims because their injuries were too severe.

It was confirmed that a young girl between five and seven years old, was one of the fatalities.

She was travelling with two men and a woman, believed to be her mother, when the accident happened.

The driver of the other vehicle also died.

Bethal EMS and Langamed Ambulance Services were on the scene to assist.

Members from Bethal CPF regulated the traffic.

The police remained on the scene until the road was cleared and safe for public use.

The highway was reopened just after 1am on 19 June.

Bethal Police’s spokesman, Const Thomas Mogadime, urged motorists to adhere to the speed limit and not to overtake when it is not safe to do so.

He further warned motorists to ensure that when they drive at night, all lights of the vehicle are in working order.
