Community takes to the streets to voice concerns

They said the municipality must stop the use of water truck and repair pipes.

Local residents took to the streets and submitted a memorandum with a list of their grievances to the Lekwa municipal offices on 20 April.

The protesters gathered at the Sakhile Stadium and made their way to the municipal offices, while the old and frail were transported by a bus.

There was a large police presence at the stadium and at the municipal offices before and during the march.

The police also guarded the protesters as they marched peacefully to the municipal offices.

Upon arrival, Mr Jacob Buthelezi read the memorandum on behalf of the community and Ms Harriett Khota, speaker, accepted the memorandum.

The municipality was given seven days to respond to the listed grievances including the appointed smart meter company, dirty water, sewer leakages, potholes and service providers.

According to the memorandum, the municipal management agreed that Makgaji Project, a company appointed to install the meters, had to control and manage municipal accounts since 28 August 2015 to 24 May last year and subsequently collected R35,587-mil.
