Chief Justice asks probing questions

More than 17 million people are waiting with bated breath

Chief Justice Mogoeng Mogoeng tried to get to the bottom of the Sassa crisis in the Constitutional Court on Wednesday, 15 March.

Ms Bathabile Dlamini, Minister of the Department of Social Development, has assured the country repeatedly that social grants will be paid on 1 April.

Civil society organisations such as Black Sash and Freedom under Law approached the court to ask for intervention now that Cash Paymaster Services’ (CPS) contract is set to expire.

The court declared the contract invalid in 2013 due to an unlawful tender process and suspended the order of invalidity until 31 March to allow the department and Sassa to meet the administrative requirements to distribute grants.

More than 17 million people are waiting with bated breath on the outcome of the dispute.
