Secunda businessman appears in court for murder of former colleague

Hennie van Rooyen was granted bail at the Durban Magistrate’s Court..

SECUNDA – A Secunda business man, Mr Hennie van Rooyen, who was arrested in connection with the murder of Mr Jan Johannes (Hannes) Craemer, a 28-year-old married father who disappeared in late 2015, appeared and was granted bail in the Durban Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday, 15 February.

Mr Craemer was last seen on 30 November 2015 after finishing his shift at work and was reported missing to Brighton Beach Police by his family shortly afterwards.

His body was discovered in a Durban hotel on 3 December 2015.

He had been shot in the head.

Mr Van Rooyen and Craemer were once colleagues at Van Vreden’s Panel Beaters in Tzaneen.

Mr Van Rooyen was granted bail of R3 000 after submitting a Schedule six bail application.

During his bail application, Mr Van Rooyen stated under oath that he had acted in self-defense.

His medical condition weighed heavily in favour of his release on bail, his medical condition being the result of injuries sustained in a vehicle accident near Middelburg, Mpumalanga when he was travelling from Durban back to Secunda shortly after Mr Craemer’s murder.

The case was postponed to 28 April to allow for further investigations.
