Nerston Border Police have chalked up another success in preventing dagga being smuggled into the country.

At about 08:10 last Thursday, they received information that suspects were busy loading dagga into a vehicle in the Stafford area near the border.

Unit commander of the Nerston Border Police, Capt L. J. Fourie, and Const. J.A. Mwela immediately drove to scene of the alleged activity.

At about 8:45, they spotted a vehicle fitting the description and apprehended the suspects for questioning.

The vehicle was taken to the Nerston post where it was searched. Police found 30 rolls of dry dagga, wrapped in plastic and packaging tape, hidden in various parts in the vehicle. The combined weight of the dagga was 7.05 kg and has a street value of R10 757.

The driver and his passenger were then arrested on suspicion of dealing in dagga. The vehicle being used, a Nissan Bluebird valued at R60 000, was confiscated.

Further investigations revealed that the passenger was an illegal foreigner and faces further charges of entering the country illegally.

Both suspects were detained at the Amsterdam Police Station and appeared in court at Amsterdam on Friday.
