Shack dwellers in Ext 6 were left stranded when a flash flood hit Standerton on 5 February.

Homes and property were damaged, however no loss of life was reported.

The Department of Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management stepped in and visited the area to assess the damage.

“We informed the South African Social Security Agency (Sassa) about the situation at Ext 6 after visiting the area,” Mr Jabulani Mkhwanazi of the Department of Fire, Rescue and Disaster Management said.

He confirmed that Sassa did go to area on 8 February.

According to Mr Mos Mahlangu, ward councillor, Sassa said they will provide food parcels and blankets to the affected families.

“They began registering all the people that needed help at the Ext 6 community hall on 9 February,” he said.

Mr Mahlangu also said he has approached one of the local schools to provide stationery to the children living in the affected area.

“We still need to engage with the Department of Home Affairs because some of the people lost their identity documents.”

Businesses in town, especially in Krogh Street, were not spared.

This is the second flash flood that hits Standerton in less than a month.
