Residents disrupt employment meeting

“People should just understand that we will not all be employed in one day.”

LEANDRA – Residents disrupted an employment process meeting at the Lebohang Stadium.

The meeting took place on Thursday, 26 January and was meant to employ people for Consolidated Power Projects (Pty) Ltd (Conco) that is subcontracted by Eskom.

Conco specialises in the creation of turnkey solutions for the electricity supply industry based on the design, procurement, construction, commissioning and project management of high voltage installations, including substations, overhead power lines, protection and automation systems, renewable energy and operations and maintenance solutions.

The reason for the meeting emanated from previous meetings held on the Delmas/Kriel road late last year.

The company held a consultative meeting with residents after allegations that they were busy employing people.

During one of the meetings last year, residents urged the company not to use councillors during the recruitment process.

They blamed councillors of employing their friends and family members.

Conco took the advise of the residents of getting people at the stadium where boxes were put up in which people put copies of their identity document for the shuffling process.

Conco informed residents last year they only wanted 30 people for general work and they would advertise vacancies for skilled workers.

The company had in mind having a steering committee in each ward that will monitor the employment process.

More than six hundred people turned out at the stadium last Thursday and when the employment process began, residents became uncontrollable and disrupted the meeting.

A resident said he thought he was dreaming, referring to what he saw people do at the stadium.

“People should understand that we will not all be employed in one day.

“That was a good strategy to ensure a fair process, but residents blew it,” said a resident.

Conco’s vehicle was also damaged.

Some residents took to social media on which they politicised the employment process and turned it into a political battle.

Conco local offices were contacted for comment asking them what will be their next step regarding the hiring process since the hiring meeting of last week Thursday was disrupted and they referred us to the Human Resource Offices in Johannesburg.

The paper was informed that the Human Resource Manager was not present in the office for comment and they promised to investigate and give comment on Wednesday, 1 February.
