Exclusive online: Flood victim talks about ordeal

“We are still pretty much in shock, but happy to be alive.”

Mr Thabo Mashiane from Rustenburg spoke about his terrifying experience last night when a flash flood hit Standerton.

He booked in at the Billy Bee Lodge, room 16, and his car was parked outside in front of the building.

Mr Mashiane was lying in bed when the water came streaming into his room.

He and his girlfriend tried to open the door of the room but could not manage due to the pressure of the water.

Two men broke open the room door from the outside and they managed to escape and found higher ground.

He was only able to assess the damage of his car this morning.
