Stay safe during long road journeys

s fun as road trips may seem, it can also be extremely long and tiring. Follow these tips below to ensure a safe arrival to your destination.

With the festive season celebrations, many people choose to go away for the holidays. As fun as road trips may seem, it can also be extremely long and tiring. This can take its toll on any driver.

The Road Accident Fund (RAF) has initiated a fatigue management operation which is directed at long-distance drivers. According to the National Road Traffic Report 2011, fatigue is one of the major causes of road crashes.

As stated on the Road Accident Fund’s website, the fund usually partners with law enforcement and road safety officers to conduct fatigue management operations. Drivers are requested by the traffic police to step out from their vehicles and they are advised about the importance of resting, wearing seatbelts and other road safety tips and are offered refreshments before they continue with their trips. They are, therefore, practically made to rest.

The Department of Health also conducts health screenings of the drivers during this break. The campaign is conducted during the peak holiday season and October Transport Month.

Consider these tips before embarking on a long distance journey:

  • Before beginning a long drive, always get enough sleep and eat a snack or meal.
  • Remember to stop regularly and take a break even if you don’t feel sleepy or tired. Get some fresh air and stretch your legs. This will help freshen you up.
  • When possible, share the driving responsibilities with someone else. This will allow you time to rest and the full journey does not depend solely on one person
  • Although a road trip can be somewhat boring at times, always avoid using your cell phone whilst driving. Do not text whilst driving or use your cell phone for any other reason. Although, it is legal to talk on a cell phone whilst driving, it’s usually safest to use a hands-free device.
