GMM wins Greenest Municipality award

The municipality received a trophy, a certificate and R100 000.

SECUNDAGovan Mbeki Municipality scooped up the Best Performing Municipality Award in the 2016 Greenest Municipality Competition, previously known as the Cleanest Town Competition, in Mpumalanga.

The Mpumalanga Department of Agriculture, Rural Development Land and Environmental Affairs honoured municipalities for their environmental footprint and green practices during the provincial competition.

Govan Mbeki will now represent the province at national level next year.

The municipality received a trophy, a certificate and R100 000.

The municipalities’ efforts in greening practices were judged based on the best water management practices, the most outstanding practice in waste management and the best landscaping and beautification strategies.

Ms Flora Maboa-Boltam, executive mayor, announced the award at the council meeting held at the Council Chamber on Thursday, 3 December.

She said she is proud of the municipality’s performance and believes it will also do well on national level.

Ms Maboa-Boltman also announced that the municipality obtained an unqualified opinion report.

“We have been obtaining the same report for a while and it is time that we up the standard so that we can get a very good report.

“Let’s work together as councillors to bring a positive change in our municipality.”
